Client guide
How to get ready for your shoot.
Twenty minutes of prep makes the difference between good photos and photos you'll use for two years. Here's the short list, by kind of business.
Everyone
Before I arrive
- Clear counters and surfaces of anything you wouldn't want in a photo
- Turn on every light, replace any dead bulbs
- Clean windows and glass
- Have the people you want photographed there, in what they'd normally wear
- Decide on the one thing you most want to sell this month
Restaurants and cafés
Food and room
- Pick 6 to 8 dishes and drinks, including the one you're known for
- Plate them fresh while I'm there, one at a time
- Have clean plates, glassware and a few props from the room
- A quiet hour, with a couple of regulars happy to be in the background
Builders and trades
Job sites and finished work
- Finished projects: cleaned, staged if possible, owner's permission in writing
- Active sites: crew in branded shirts, tools out, trucks washed
- A list of the details you're proud of: the trim, the tile, the framing
- Drone: let me know if neighbors or airspace could be an issue
Clinics, salons and gyms
People and rooms
- Team in matching or coordinated clothing, hair and makeup as for a normal day
- One or two clients or patients who've agreed to be photographed
- Rooms tidy, screens off, personal items out of frame
- A short list of the treatments or classes to show
Retail and products
Shelves and product
- Best sellers and new arrivals pulled and steamed or dusted
- Shelves faced and full
- Packaging, tags and bags on hand
- Someone to model or hold product if it helps
What to wear
For anyone on camera
- Solid colors over busy patterns
- Branded shirts if you have them, clean and unwrinkled
- Avoid large logos from other brands
- Bring a second option; we'll pick together
